Nick Tutolo is a middle school math teacher at the Environmental Charter School, Pittsburgh. Originally a science teacher, he takes a different approach to teaching math. Through the use of authentic contexts, he engages students in developing the ‘need to know’ of mathematics education. He pushes the boundaries of what is thought of as the traditional way of teaching mathematics.
Nick is interested in a developing the whole child and works to meet the students where they are and allow them to show their brilliance by keying in on student strengths to bring students to the table of their own learning. Character education is something that he holds as the foundation in which learning and education is derived. While engaging in topics of social justice and equity, Nick works to change the conversation about how we think and talk about education starting within the school community and moving outward.
